Risky Recommendation
The honest truth is that I’m a little nervous writing this blog. There are a few thoughts going through my head and I’m curious how you, the reader will receive what I’m going to write about. There is something I’d like to recommend, but as the title says, it’s a little risky…
For one, I don’t read as much as I’d like. The reason? I don’t like it. I actually like learning, but have a hard time committing to reading. Maybe I need glasses or something. But, I’m getting off topic.
I’d like to give you a couple reading recommendations. My favorite monthly magazine is Pro Sound News. You can probably get a free subscription. It covers a lot of areas of sound, but I always go straight to the Sound Reinforcement section. If you want a look into live audio systems, who is traveling with what gear, and pick up some tips and tricks along the way, check this one out.
Now, there are 2 reasons I consider this a risky recommendation. One is that this magazine doesn’t exactly cover ‘Christian’ bands, and if you’re a church sound guy, I hope you don’t discount the information you can learn from these seasoned professionals.
My second reason for being reserved about recommending this reading, is because a lot of the techniques these guys like to talk about will probably not be applicable in your Sunday morning service. For one, these guys have access to the best audio systems, top of the line consoles, and microphones that probably collectively cost more than your entire church system. Notice though!!! … how often SM58′s and 57′s are used. It’s unreal. Both mics are under $100, and they are used all the time. So, take note of mic techniques and using outboard gear, but keep it simple in your own mix. Deal?
I’d also like to recommend EQ Magazine, Mix Magazine, and the ‘Bible’ of sound reinforcement- Yamaha’s Sound Reinforcement Handbook. Find an interesting article? Send me a link on Twitter. Got a question about something you don’t understand? Post it in our Facebook group. Happy reading!
