Pink Noise. Stink Noise.

There are a few colorful noises in audio. Pink noise. White noise. What does it all mean? When I have a question, I consult wikipedia.org. Their description of pink noise is:

1/Æ’ noise is used… to refer to any noise with a power spectral density of the form

S(f) \propto 1/f^\alpha

where Æ’ is frequency and 0 < α < 2, with α usually close to 1. These “1/Æ’-like” noises occur widely in nature and are a source of considerable interest in many fields.

There. Does that clear it all up?

Why CDs Are Louder Than Your Band

CDplayerHave you ever tried to set up your sound system around how a CD sounds? Setting the system overall EQ this way is fine. But, if you put in a CD (or iPod if you’re under 30), then turn up the faders til the meters hit zero; now turn up the amp so that the music fills up the room until it’s just a little too loud (you’ll want to have a little bit of headroom), then wait for the band to start playing… the band seems so much quieter! Why?

Show Reviewed

Franz FerdinandA few months ago, I was listening to the radio in the mid-afternoon. The DJ announced a show that had just been booked for Columbus, and the 9th caller would win a pair of tickets. If you’re like me, you want to win, even if you don’t know the band or care that much. Of course, I was the 9th caller. That show was Saturday, and uh, it was incredible!

If you follow my Twitter, you may have saw that I hated the opening band. They had no melody to their songs. There was just nothing that sounded like they were trying to speak to me or get my attention. It was more about ‘look at the wierd sounds I can make with this pedal” and “see how crazy of a guy I am?” I almost left then.
